Question

How do I find a book using the Discovery search tool?

The Discovery search tool allows you to search for physical and electronic library resources. Use the steps provided to refine your search results to find books.

Starting your search

Using the search box on the library homepage, enter your search terms:

  • If you are doing a title search, start with ti: before entering the title.
  • If you are doing an author search, enter au: before entering a name.

Tip: Combine the author and title terms with AND for the best results. For example, ti: Kindred AND au: Butler

Refining your search results

Once on your search results page, you can modify, expand, or refine your search.

  1. The search terms you entered remain at the top and can easily be modified.
  2. Filters used to limit the search, such as Print Book and ebook, are displayed near the top of the page. Filters can be removed by clicking on the purple x.
  3. Expand your search beyond Torreyson Library by selecting Libraries Worldwide. This is a good option if you have time to request a book through Interlibrary Loan.
  4. Additional Filter Options can be selected to refine your results or unselected to expand your results.

Evaluate your results and access the book

Brief Item Record

You can quickly assess the results by viewing the information included in the brief record.

  1. The brief record provides critical details about the book (an image, title, author, material type, publishing details, summary, etc.) to help you determine if this is the correct item you are looking for.
  2. The availability tells you if the book can be checked out and its location and call number.
  3. Tools that can help you organize your research are also provided, including citation generator, sharing, and saving options.
  4. If the book is available as an ebook, the View eBook button will link directly to the ebook.

Detailed Item Record

More information about the book can be found by clicking on the book title on the results page, which will open the book's detailed record.

  1. Under the Access Options,
  • You can access electronic content if available.
  • See availability and location. One location for the item is displayed, but a link is provided to view additional copies and locations.
  • For items in the library, you can Place a Hold. When you place a hold on a book, library staff will pull the item from the shelf for you to pick up at the circulation desk or with locker delivery.
  1. Select More Item Details to see the complete book description, including subject headings.
  2. Information about item availability and location is under See Availability of this Edition at University of Central Arkansas. This area is the only place where all the item's locations are displayed.
